Time is optimal to alter Manchester United's tactical setup - Amorim declares.

Manchester United squad members in training
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was among seven first-team players absent from the holiday period win against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim contends that changing Man Utd's formation due to external scrutiny would have signaled "the end" for him.

Initially against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his customary three-at-the-back setup with wing-backs and opted to use an standard four-man defense with two defensive midfielders.

By his own admission this ultimately functioned as a back six in the closing stages as his squad clung on for a crucial result - securing only their second-ever clean sheet of the campaign.

Despite he once famously said that even the Pope could pressure him to change his system, Amorim maintains the option to experiment with different formations has consistently been part of his long-term vision.

However, he clarifies he could only make the switch when his team were performing at an acceptable level - otherwise it would look as if he was bowing to external noise.

"At the time I arrived here the previous campaign, I understood maybe I lacked the squad to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the commencement of a project," he stated.

"The goal was to forge an style. Currently is a separate time. We don't have a lot of players, and we need be flexible, so they comprehend why we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the pressure of you guys, or the fans.

"When the press criticize altering the formation repeatedly, I cannot change because the players will understand I'm changing because of you and I think that is a disaster for the manager.

"Once we are playing well in our system, that becomes the opportunity to adapt.

"We will develop into a better team because when our full complement of players are back, we are not intending to employ a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

With just two wins in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to say his side have been in good form.

He is, though, managing with a severely stretched squad, with seven first-team players already confirmed absent for the upcoming fixture against winless Wolves.

That number will increase if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to recover the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, even though he is understood to be pushing his manager to let him to make a comeback after his muscle problem.

"Bruno is already insisting he has to practice," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. You can write that."

Fernandes' Influence Remains

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will probably still be heavily involved, as whereas most injured players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to continue offering input.

"The guy is a leader," he stated. "He must not be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's always communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has flaws sometimes - the way he gesticulates - but he has a lot of positive qualities. After he finishes treatment, he heads to watch the other guys training. There are a many things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Key Personnel

While the specific timeline for the captain's return - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
